Things I’m pondering

I’ve covered a growing range of topics in my posts so far in 2023. Many of them are spur of the moment (what do you mean you can tell?). Some are a little more considered, even planned and researched. There are a number of things interesting me intellectually which I’d like to try and write about at some point:

  • One of the things that has been bugging me since I got here last August is the cost of everything here in the US. Whenever that phrase pops into my head, my mind jumps to Oscar Wilde’s ‘price of everything, value of nothing’ quote and in turn to the economics book The Value of Everything. Why does the US seem so expensive? Especially in comparison to the UK, let alone continental Europe. I’ve tried to do some digging, I’ve even asked ChatGTP about it. So maybe if I make some headway that could the basis for some good posts.
  • I’m still in the process of unpacking some of the time management stuff that I got from the Oliver Burkeman course. It’s already generated one blog post and I’m sure there’ll be more reflections to come.
  • I have my return to St Andrews fast approaching and it’d be nice to write more about golf. Finding time for golf and having a different relationship with the game, especially after my practical addiction to it back in the UK, is going to be fertile territory for some writing.
  • I continue to work through How Teaching Happens whenever I find the time and making more time for professional development is something I’d like to do. Working through curriculum development in my new school, drawing on my previous experience and applying it to a new context is again something which might make for some worthwhile posts.
  • Plus there is always my ongoing consumption of media – books, films and of course TV. There will undoubtedly be reviews and comments aplenty!
